Who You Are At 6pm
The practices that survive when the calendar empties out.
The firm tells you who you are from 8 to 6. Your title, your practice group, your office number, your place in the org chart. But at 6pm, when the building starts to empty and the day's demands quiet down, there's a version of you that the firm didn't create and can't control.
That version is the one who decides whether this career is sustainable. Not the one who performs well in meetings or hits billing targets, but the one who has to live with the choices the daytime version makes.
The identity gap
The professionals who last in this industry aren't the ones who gave everything to the firm. They're the ones who kept something back. An interest, a relationship, a practice, a perspective that belongs to them and not to their employer. That thing at 6pm is what makes the thing at 8am worth doing.
